Business Security Systems Westfield NJ | Commercial Surveillance

Are your current business security systems up to the task? It might seem an odd question at first. Most of us think that a CCTV camera and a simple alarm are enough to deter theft and apprehend the culprits if we’re the targets of business crime. While that first part is sometimes true, protecting your business effectively is going to require more than just basic solutions.

IS A SECURITY CAMERA ENOUGH?

Let’s look at some sources. Though some research has shown that CCTVs alone have played a part in reducing crime in the public sphere, they note that this effect doesn’t extend to businesses. The areas that saw the greatest crime reduction were parking lots. Public settings and transit systems also saw some slight benefits. All well and good, but not exactly encouraging news for business owners who want to keep business theft to a minimum.

Also note that in the areas that did see a reduction in crime, it wasn’t total. The bottom line: criminals were still active. You may have a perception that the camera is the ultimate security device, capable of both deterring and identifying criminals in one fell swoop. It turns out this understanding may be incorrect. Consider the following:

  • Criminals don’t behave like normal members of society. When we think of a security camera scaring away potential intruders, we often insert ourselves in the place of said intruder. While it might be true that most honest people would be afraid of getting caught on camera, criminals don’t always operate by the same rules.
  • They could be mentally ill, or in an altered state, and not care that the cameras are present. They could be crafty and know that video surveillance has limitations they can exploit. On the opposite end, they could be so brazen and dense that they don’t even notice the cameras are there. Regardless, simply having a camera present isn’t enough to scare away a vast majority of criminals.
  • How about apprehending the criminals? Surely the camera would suffice for getting a good look at the alleged suspect so that the authorities can track them down? Unfortunately, that’s not true in every case. Sometimes a camera can get a clear view of the action, but in many cases, the recorded video doesn’t clearly display who is committing the illicit act, if it can even display that something illegal is occurring. The angle could be off, the field of view could be wrong, or the criminals could just exploit the camera’s blind spots to obscure their actions.
