CARBON MONOXIDE AND SMOKE DETECTOR LIFE EXPECTANCY

3/28/08
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
The life expectancy of a carbon monoxide detector which is part of a security system is approximately 5 to 6 years.  After this period of time, if carbon monoxide is present, there is a good chance that the unit will not be able to detect the gas.

Depending on the brand, notification of sensor failure is different.  Some units have the expiration date written on a label under the cover.  Other units have a combination of visual notification and chirping.  Feel free to contact us for more specific information on the unit which was installed in your home or business.

It is not a bad idea to be proactive and if your units are 5 years old, have the sensors replaced.

SMOKE DETECTORS
Smoke detectors have a life expectancy of 10 – 15 years and when they fail, have a tendency to false alarm.  Commercial fire alarm systems are required to have their systems inspected at least once a year by a licensed contractor in accordance with NFPA standards.  No such requirement exists for residential fire alarms, but it is highly recommended that these systems be checked for proper operation as well.

Feel free to contact us for testing guidelines or further information.

AMPS SUNSET IMMINENT

1/24/08
If you have a cellular back up for your alarm system, February 18, 2008 is a very important date. On that day, all analog cellular back up units will stop functioning due to FCC regulations. Analog Mobile Phone Service will be discontinued and only newer, digital units will work. There are options available, however. Please contact us for details.

TO VOIP OR NOT TO VOIP

1/10/08
Voice over internet protocol, or internet telephone is here to stay. Virtually every cable system offers telephone service today. If you decide to switch to this service and have a home alarm system, there are some things you should think about. First, with traditional telephone service, even if power goes out, your telephone service works, and if necessary your alarm system can dial out to the central station. If power goes out, your cable modem will no longer work and you’re alarm system will not be able to dial out. You should have a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply so the modem will continue to work, although for a short period of time.

Second, when you’re alarm system was installed, the phone was wired for line seizure. Basically, the phone line goes through the alarm system before reaching the rest of the phones in the house. VOIP often feeds the phone line to the house through a phone jack, putting the alarm system somewhere on the path, but not in the beginning, where it needs to be. The alarm system is also being fed in reverse, often creating phone problems with phones throughout the house. Worse, however, is that the alarm system may not be able to dial out when necessary.

Third, since VOIP is different from traditional phone service, not all alarm systems are compatible with it. This is particularly true with older systems.

The savings are great with VOIP, but you should test your alarm system immediately after it is installed. Make sure the central station receives the signal in a timely fashion. While the system is dialing out, make sure none of the other telephones have dial tone. VOIP is here to stay but make sure you still have the same level of protection you have come to rely on. To be safe, consider adding a back up communicator to your alarm system.
